These series of postcards, stickers and buttons, and their accompanying social media campaigns, came from a very personal drive to counter the painful public discourse and anti-trans legislation introduced around the country in 2020-22, primarily impacting trans youth. My aim is to equip and empower parents, LGBTQ+ folx, and our allies to talk about what being trans and non-binary means, and to advocate for our right to live authentically and joyfully.
I created an online shop in April 2021, with a ‘Buy + Give’ option for every item. This encourages shoppers to contribute towards the hundreds of stickers I donate to nonprofit advocacy organizations across the US that then distribute them free of charge to trans kids and their allies. Together, we spread the message that they are not fighting alone, and that they are worthy of love and support.
Trans Kids are Kids
Designed as symbols of love, joy, and support, I chose to print the stickers on durable holographic vinyl to give them a unique rainbow sheen. Stickers and pin orders include a ‘How I Talk to Kids’ postcard —also available individually. I was moved to discover people ordering duplicate postcards to send to their local libraries.
What started out as a simple introduction to a book I was about to read to my daughter’s class became an Instagram posted shared thousands of times across LGBTQ+ resource pages, educators’ accounts, and by individual parents and allies. See the post.
You Have Queer & Trans Ancestors
Whether the message brings your comfort, or a bit of necessary discomfort: You are not alone in the universe, and we will never be erased. Colorful reflective stickers, buttons, and postcards (“perfect for writing a strongly-worded letter to your Congress member, and for a love note to your favorite trans niece or nephew”) take a provocative tone, hoping to start conversations in classrooms, offices, and shops.
This series of slides—highlighting my research of people, genders, and cultures that exist/ed outside the conventions of binary gender throughout history and around the world—was created for Instagram. See the post.
