The contemporary American Flag pays tribute to thirteen colonies and fifty arbitrary states with imagery that pretends that our nation’s history begins with the colonists. In response to Amplifier’s American Flag Remix campaign, I utilized the familiar design language to instead honor the 573 federally-recognized American Indian and Alaska Native nations that far predate 1776. The light blue side stripes represent coastal borders, while the top and bottom (north and south) are left intentionally open.
My Flag Remix submission was one of twelve selected to tour in exhibition throughout July 2020.
Exhibitions were canceled due to COVID-19.
Note: As of 2021, the US recognizes 574 tribal nations. source
